CAPE TOWN, 1 August 2025 – The South African Golf Association (SAGA) is pleased to announce the re-election of Henk Smith as President, following the organisation’s Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

Smith first took over the reins as Acting President in August 2021 following the unexpected passing of former President Martin Saaiman. He was officially elected as President at the SAGA Annual General Meeting on 24 April 2022 and served in that capacity until the end of the 2024 term. His re-election now marks the start of a new chapter, building on his proven leadership and deep commitment to the amateur game.

Joining Smith in continuing their leadership roles are Peet van Schalkwyk, re-elected as Senior Vice-President, and Thinus Labuschagne, re-elected as Junior Vice-President. Together, they bring experience, continuity, and a shared dedication to promoting and growing the game throughout South Africa.

“We are honoured to have earned the trust of our member unions once again,” said Smith. “I look forward to continuing the important work we’ve started, strengthening amateur golf structures, driving transformation, and providing more opportunities for our players, clubs, and provinces.”

GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn also welcomed the re-election of Smith and his executive team.

“Henk has played a vital role in stabilising and advancing the amateur game over the past few years, and we are delighted to continue working closely with him and his team. His steady leadership, deep understanding of the sport, and passion for development make him the ideal person to guide SAGA forward.

“I would also like to acknowledge and thank the outgoing President, Mr Deon Nel for service to golf and his many years of commitment to the SAGA.”

The SAGA is the major stakeholder in GolfRSA and will continue working collaboratively to foster inclusive growth, player development, and excellence in amateur golf nationwide.

Outgoing SAGA President Deon Nel expressed his confidence in the incoming office bearers.

“It’s been a privilege to serve SAGA, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made. I have no doubt that SAGA is in very capable hands moving forward.”
