Lora Assad played a third consecutive round of 77 at the Gate American Junior Masters to finish best of the SA girls tied seventh on +15 (231). Austrian Marina Stutz increased her lead with a fine one under 71 in the final round to win the event on +2, 218 (74, 73, 71).
The boys’ championship was won by USA’s Cody Proveaux on -5 211 (68, 74, 69) with SA’s Haydn Porteus in eighth position on +1 217 (74, 74, 69).
Top SA junior, Lara Weinstein is tied sixth on the leader board at +8 going into the final round of the Gate Junior Masters being played at Ponte Vedra in Florida, USA. The leader is Austrian Marina Stutz on +3. And in the boys’ competition the leading South African is Haydn Porteus, tied 14th on +4. Three of the WGSA juniors participating in the Gate Junior Masters are on a pre-championship shopping/practice stay in Orlando Florida with chaperone Erica Lefson who is spending Christmas in Florida and also attending the Gate tournament as a Junior Masters official. Eight South African Juniors arrived at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida yesterday to compete in the Gate American Junior being played from 20 to 22 December. The players are Lara Weinstein, Izel Pieters, Cara Gorlei, Stephanie Perkins, Lora Assad, Jonathan Botha, Matt Bright and Haydn Porteus.
Two Swedish junior girls, including Lynn Carlsson, winner of the 2011 Harder German Masters, visited South Africa last week and played friendly matches against some of our juniors.
Pictured here are Carrie Park and Magda Kruger who played against the Swedes at The Els Club in Pretoria, and earlier in the week, Kelly Erasmus and Leanke Vlok (no longer a junior) competed against the visitors.
Jenny Brown, ex KZN, sends good wishes and news of her daughter, Lindsay who is about to turn pro and go to Q-school in Spain in January.
