The South African amateur golf team beat Argentina, the defending champions, 4 and 2, in the final round of the 2009 Southern Cross Cup, to finish second for the fourth consecutive time.
The win that South African amateur golf team needed, against host nation New Zealand, in the second and penultimate round of the Southern Cross Cup, did not materialize, instead ending all square with both teams getting 3 points a piece.

JG Claassen continued his rich vein of form when he won the 2009 Zimbabwe Amateur Golf Championship yesterday, played over 72 holes of stroke play at the Royal Harare Golf Club. He finished on 277, eleven under par, one shot clear of a leader board that was dominated by the South African Zone VI team.
