North West proclaimed their intention with a dominating performance in the opening round of the SA Country Districts Tournament in the Eastern Cape, but the defending champions came unstuck against a spirited Boland challenge on day two at the Fish River Sun Country Club.

Persistent Watson wins Volvo SA Mid-Amateur

A birdie at the 10th and a Seve Ballesteros-style bunker shot at the 12th boosted Graeme Watson’s flagging confidence and carried the Ebotse golfer to victory at the Volvo South African Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship on Friday.
Watson carded rounds of 70, 71, 70 and 73 at Ruimsig Country Club to claim a four shot victory over Modderfontein’s Steve Williams on a winning score of four-under-par 284.

Lawrence in the hunt at Irish Amateur

Just a few days after he lifted the Royal Lytham Trophy in England, reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion Thriston Lawrence is in pursuit of Irishman Gary McDermott at the Irish Amateur Open in Dublin.
Lawrence became the first South African to win the prestigious Royal Lytham Trophy on Sunday, and now hopes to emulate Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, who won the championship in 2002.

Former champion Neil Homann claimed a share of the three-way tie atop a tightly packed leaderboard in the first round of the Volvo South African Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Ruimsig Country Club on Tuesday.
The 2012 champion from Wanderers recovered well from a bumpy start to reel in three birdies after the turn and set the early target at two-under-par 70.
