SA juniors geared for Italian challenge

South Africa’s top ranked junior Jovan Rebula from Southern Cape, Ekurhuleni’s Kyle McClatchie and Gauteng North golfers Keegan de Lange and Rosswell Sinclair will use today’s practice round at the Golf Club Biella in Italy to become well acquainted with the par-73 championship layout before they tee it up in the seventh Italian International Under-16 Championship this week. The junior quartet will compete in the individual 72-hole competition and the 36-hole Nations Trophy team event, played over the first two rounds of the championship.

In the second instalment of our Back Nine series with South Africa’s top mid-amateur golfers, we talk to South Africa’s number two ranked mid-amateur, Greg Sheard, who busted into the top five of the mid-amateur rankings when he claimed the Volvo South Africa Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship in May and has since bolstered his ranking with a second place finish at the Eastern Province Mid-Amateur in June, a tie for seventh at the North West Mid-Amateur Stroke Play in July and his second victory this season at the Pro Shop / Volvo KZN Mid-Amateur Open in August.

Faber’s fabulous ace a good omen?

Local favourite James Faber is counting on a recent hole-in-one being a good omen ahead of this weekend’s Southern Cape Open at Plettenberg Bay Country Club.

The 40-year-old Faber, or FJ as he is fondly known, knows he has the home course advantage and he can rely on the support from his regular playing partners, friends and family, but he is hoping that the ace will bring him luck, and the winning edge on Sunday.

Du Plessis claims Kenya Junior Championship

South Africa’s Hennie du Plessis put on a master class from tee to green for at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi to claim a commanding victory in the Kenya Junior Championship on Thursday.

Although the 16-year-old Polokwane golfer dropped four shots in the last three holes of the final round, his fourth successive 70 was good enough to secure a 17-shot victory in the prestigious Kenya Junior Golf Foundation event.

Du Plessis surges clear in Kenya

South Africa’s Hennie du Plessis will take an almost unassailable lead into the final round of the prestigious Kenya Junior Championship on Thursday.

The 16-year-old Polokwane golfer shared the 36-hole lead with the country’s number one ranked amateur and defending champion, Daniel Nduva, but pulled well clear of the chasing pack with a third successive 70 at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

Du Plessis shares Kenya Junior Champs lead

South Africa’s Hennie du Plessis claimed a share of the lead the 36-hole mark of the prestigious Kenya Junior Championship on Tuesday alongside with the country’s number one ranked amateur and defending champion, Daniel Nduva.

Du Plessis lagged two shots behind Nduva after opening with a one-under-par 70 at the Muthaiga Golf Club, however, a second successive 70 saw the 16-year-old Polokwane golfer join Nyali’s Nduva in pole after the local favourite returned a second round 72.
