Porteous on course for KZN Amateur defence

South Africa’s top ranked amateur Haydn Porteous continued his purple patch with a three shot victory in the KwaZulu-Natal Amateur Championship – Stroke Play Qualifier at Umhlali Country Club on Thursday.

Porteous opened with a four under 67 and took a one shot lead over Raynard Badenhorst and local favourite Christiaan van der Merwe into the final round of the 36-hole qualifier. He dropped just one shot on his way to a final round six-under-par 65 to clinch the title on 10-under-par 132.

Central Gauteng, North West and Boland in command

Defending champions Central Gauteng hit the front in Thursday’s fourth round at the SA Challenge Inter-Provincial in Vereeniging, while the North West strengthened their hold on the A-Section and Boland remained on track for promotion after their fourth successive win in this year’s SA Country Districts Tournament in Upington.

Log leaders Central Gauteng and the SAGA Juniors continue to share the top spot after drawing their match at the third round of the SA Challenge Inter-Provincial at Maccauvlei, while Mpumalanga barely managed to hang on to the A-Section lead while Boland kept their promotion hunt alive with a 10-2 result over Karoo at the Country Districts Tournament at Upington Golf Club.

Another Cape success for Porteous at Boland Open

South Africa’s top amateur Haydn Porteous has done so well in the Cape Province in the last three months, he might consider want to consider spending even more time at the coast. On Thursday, the country’s number one ranked amateur claimed the Boland Open with a four-stroke victory on 14-under-par 202 for his fifth win this season, and his third in the Cape since winning the SA Stroke Play Championship in February.

SA team still Africa Zone VI champions

South Africa successfully defended their Africa Zone VI Golf Championship title with another dominating performance in the final round singles at Windhoek Golf and Country Club on Thursday.

The SA team claimed the full eight points on offer after a clean sweep in the first round singles, and took a 2.5 point lead on 15.5 into the final round after winning all four morning foursomes matches, three afternoon fourball matches and halving one fourball in round two.

South Africa continued their winning run with seven single victories and another halve to finish on a total of 23 points. The local heroes finished four points clear of Zimbabwe in second and eight points ahead of the host nation in third place. This marks the 13th time South Africa has lifted the title of Africa’s largest team event since the inaugural it was launched in 2000

SA team on track for Africa Zone VI defence

South Africa kept their title defence at the Africa Zone VI Golf Championships alive with another commanding performance in Wednesday’s second round at Windhoek Golf and Country Club.

After a clean sweep in the first round singles, the eight-man side cleaned up with four wins in the morning foursomes and added three more victories in the afternoon fourballs. Gerlou Roux and Louis Taylor had to fend off a spirited challenge from their Namibian rivals in the foursomes, but the South African pair hung on to halve their game with P. Barnard and B. Britten to contribute to the team’s 2.5 point lead in the championship.
