A determined posse of Gauteng North golfers will throw down the gauntlet in the Sanlam South African Amateur Championship, which tees off at Silver Lakes Golf Estate on Sunday.

South Africa’s number one ranked amateur, Tristen Strydom, is full of confidence ahead of next week’s Sanlam SA Amateur Championship at Silver Lakes Country Club after sharpening his game alongside the professionals in the Joburg Open.

Dylan Naidoo birdied three of his last four holes at the West Course for a one-under-par 70, but the 17-year-old Central Gauteng amateur still checked the Joburg Open leaderboard twice to verify his position after first round action wrapped up at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington on Thursday.

The next two weeks in South African golf will be a showcase of the young stars in the professional and amateur ranks as two of the country’s biggest tournaments in both play out back-to-back.

The Scottish Golf Union squad claimed a runaway 15.5 – 8.5 victory in the sixth edition of the annual Leopard Trophy and levelled the Test Series at three-apiece after a full-blown assault against South Africa in the final round at Leopard Creek on Thursday.

South Africa’s top ranked senior Mellette Hendrikse rambled to another play-off victory over Lawrence Franklin in the Central Gauteng Golf Union’s Senior Open to claim his second win of the season on Sunday.
