Tuks wins USSA Championship Stroke Play

Matthew Spacy made three eagles on his way to a second round six-under-par 66 that not only won him the Individual Standings title, but help the University of Pretoria to an emphatic victory in the Stroke Play qualifier of this year’s USSA (University Sport South Africa) Championships in Limpopo.

The University of Pretoria won the prestigious universities championship in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and are firm favourites to win their fourth title at the Koro Creek Country Estate. The Tuks team took a seven shot lead into the second round of the 36-hole qualifier and combined for a second round total of 364 to finish 21 strokes ahead of the Stellenbosch A side, who returned a second round 379.

Tuks take USSA Championship lead

The University of Pretoria team fought swirling winds, tough greens, first round nerves and the challenges of 15 other sides to earn the first round lead at the annual SSA (University Sport South Africa) Championships in Limpopo.

Helped by a two-under-par 70 from Regard Neethling and a pair of 72s from Werner van Niekerk and Andrew van der Knaap, the Tuks side combined for an opening score of 363 to finish seven shots clear of Stellenbosch University A.

Dlamini eyes Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur double

South African number one Nobuhle Dlamini has her sights set on a rare national amateur double when she tees it up as the favourite in next week’s Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Championship at Milnerton Golf Club.

In April, the Swazi golfer won the Sanlam Amateur Stroke Play Championship by a commanding 12 strokes at Pretoria Country Club and is focused on a career first of adding her name to the match play trophy as well.

Garcia hunts GNGU Women’s Open double

Ekurhuleni’s Nicole Garcia underlined her growing stature when she claimed an emphatic seven stroke victory in the Gauteng North Golf Union’s Womens Open Championship Stroke Play qualifier at Centurion Country Club on Monday.

The victory was her third this season, following triumph at the Gauteng 54-Hole Championship at Randpark Golf Club and the Free State & Northern Cape Championship title at Clarens Golf Estate in May.

Tuks team primed for USSA Championship

Skipper Tertius van den Berg declared the University of Pretoria team primed for battle ahead of the annual USSA (University Sport South Africa) Championships in Limpopo next week.

Van den Berg hopes to steer the eight-man team to their fourth victory in five years, but expects a tough battle at the challenging par-72 layout at the Koro Creek Golf Estate from 1-5 July.

Consistent Kang lifts Nomads SA Girls title

Ji Sun Kang produced one of the classiest performances of her young career to claim a magnificent wire-to-wire victory in the Nomads SA Girls Championship at Orkney Golf Club on Tuesday.

Starting the final round with a five shot lead, the Korean-born Western Province player signalled her intentions with an eagle three at the par-five first hole and four bogeys notwithstanding,closed with a two-over-par 74 to finish on a winning total of one-over-par 217 and a superb four shot victory over her closest challenger, team mate Cara Gorlei.

Kang hits the front at Nomads SA Girls

Korea’s Ji Sun Kang took a commanding lead in the A-Division in round one of the prestigious Nomads SA Girls Championship , while 11-year-old Caitlyn McNab grabbed a share of the B-Division lead at Orkney Golf Club on Sunday.

The 17-year-old Province player from Atlantic Beach Golf Club opened up a yawning four shot gap on her closest challenger, Carrie Park, when she became the only player to break par at the Orkney course with an opening three-under-par 69 on Sunday.
