Western Province Amateur – Tyrone Ryan does the double
The final pitted WP Stroke-Play Champion Tyrone Ryan against former SA Champion, JG Claassen. Ryan was attempting to join Thomas Aitken (2001) and Ryan Tipping (2002) as winners of both the stroke-play and match-play titles in the same year.
Eight players have been selected to play for South Africa against France in a test match from 25th and 26th May 2010, it was announced by the South African Golf Association (SAGA) today.
Dylan Frittelli, one of South Africa’s most prominent young amateur golfers, has been nominated as one of ten semi-finalists for the prestigious 2010 Ben Hogan Award.
One of the three teams, namely Kenya, Zimbabwe or South Africa, at the top of the log, at the end of yesterday’s third and penultimate round, in the Zone VI Team competition needed to win all eight games in today’s final round in order to win this annual competition. And this is exactly what Kenya did.
“We will have to win all eight matches tomorrow if we are to win this year,” is how South African team manager and South African Golf Association president, Enver Hassen, summed up his team’s uncustomary position and what is required of his players in tomorrow’s (Thursday) final round.
With the South African team largely expected to dominate the Zone VI Team competition, it was surprising to see Kenya at the top of the log at the end of today’s first round matches.
South Africa go into this year’s Zone VI Team competition, which starts on Tuesday, as the clear favourite to lift the title ahead of the eleven other African nations teeing up in the three day event being played at the Gaborone Golf Club in Botswana.
Allan Versfeld beat Steven van Heerden, in a three hole short course playoff, to win the 54 hole stroke play Botswana Open this afternoon. Both South Africans finished on level par, 213, in tough windy conditions which made good scoring on the Gaborone Golf Club difficult.
