The country’s top two contenders will go head-to-head at the seventh Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Golf Championship at Rustenburg Golf Club this week.
Smooth-swinging Kim Williams, ranked number one, and South Africa’s number two, Iliska Verwey, have both underlined their good form in the run-up to the country’s premier women’s amateur tournament.
RUSTENBURG, North West (7 April 2010) – South Africa’s former number one amateur golfer Bertine Strauss is making her comeback at the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Golf Championship after taking time off to concentrate on her studies.
Strauss will tee it up alongside her peers at the Rustenburg Golf Club to challenge in the Stroke Play from 10-12 April and the Match Play from 13-15 April.
Uitenhage’s 15-year old Kim Daniels won the SA Girls’ Rose Bowl at Clovelly Country Club this week when she carded 228 (80, 76, 72) to finish one stroke ahead of overnight leader Zayb Kippie from Royal Cape – 229 (80, 69, 76). Izel Pieters finished third on 230 (75, 80, 75).
2010 Sanlam SA Women’s ‘double’ champion, Kim Williams, will defend her stroke play and match play titles when she tees off at Rustenburg Golf Club on Sunday 10 April at 12.27pm.
From the 1st to the 3rd of April, the Southern Cape played host to yet another very successful Sanlam Cape Province Open.
A total of 134 amateurs from all across South Africa, of which most are top ranked by the South African Golf Association, entered this very prestigious tournament. The tournament was played over 3 days which started off with two pre-cut rounds played during the 1st and the 2nd of April, and was completed by playing two rounds on the 3rd of April.
After her convincing win in the KZN Stroke Play Championships, Iliska Verwey clinched her second consecutive “double” when she beat Tiffany Avern-Taplin in the final of the KZN Match Play Championships played at Durban Country Club this week. Iliska Verwey claimed her second consecutive provincial championship at the famous Durban Country Club on Sunday 27 March. She finished on four under 142 (69, 73) five shots clear of runner-up Kim William to win the KwaZulu Natal championship. Only a week ago, she had picked up the Stroke Play and Match Play trophies at the Western Province Championships.
Former Eastern Cape star Iliska Verwey clinched the double at the Western Province Championships when she overcame top-ranked Kim Williams 4/3 in the 18-hole final played at Clovelly Country Club this week. She had previously carded a second round course record 66 when she won the stroke play championship on Sunday.
