One of the three teams, namely Kenya, Zimbabwe or South Africa, at the top of the log, at the end of yesterday’s third and penultimate round, in the Zone VI Team competition needed to win all eight games in today’s final round in order to win this annual competition. And this is exactly what Kenya did.
“We will have to win all eight matches tomorrow if we are to win this year,” is how South African team manager and South African Golf Association president, Enver Hassen, summed up his team’s uncustomary position and what is required of his players in tomorrow’s (Thursday) final round.
Bhavi Shah, Nobuhle Dlamini and Madina Hussein
The selection of the three Southern African players to the International Team to compete in the 72 Hole Teams Championship in May, confirms Women Golf’s commitment to support the growth of women’s golf in the southern regions of Africa. The team is from left to right, Bhavi Shah, Nobuhle Dlamini and Madina Hussein.
Kim with Sanlam’s Jan Muller
Centurion’s Kim Williams could not contain her delight when she was presented with the coveted South African Stroke Play Championship Trophy by Sanlam’s Jan Muller at Port Elizabeth Golf Club today.
With the South African team largely expected to dominate the Zone VI Team competition, it was surprising to see Kenya at the top of the log at the end of today’s first round matches.
South Africa go into this year’s Zone VI Team competition, which starts on Tuesday, as the clear favourite to lift the title ahead of the eleven other African nations teeing up in the three day event being played at the Gaborone Golf Club in Botswana.
Joint leader Connie Chen
Connie Chen carded the low round on day two of the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur when she signed for a one-under-par 71 to tie with Lara Weinstein and Kim Williams on 144. This should make for an exciting final round on the final day of the stroke play championship tomorrow at Port Elizabeth golf course, fondly known as The Hill.
